The
Art of Darkness
In 'The Art of Darkness'
photographs I use darkness and low light locations as a blank black
canvas waiting to be filled, it only becomes part of the image when
the subject is 'painted' with light.
'Spectral Lighting' is technology for a creative and colourful method
of photography; it can be used for modelling, fashion, interiors, product
illumination, video lighting, close proximity landscape and temporary
graffiti buildings.
The lighting system allows colour selection and intensity to become
part of the artistic content of the image and at the expressive control
of the director/camera operator of the shot.
The camera is directed to capture all of the above, to create more than
a photograph, to create photographic art.
Most photographers would realise the limitation of working in darkness,
the finite and limited range of a flash restricts the results. The flash
can also light areas of the shot that are not desirable within the photograph.
Using conventional flash lighting equipment can produce photographs
in my opinion can some times seem hard and flat.
But take away the flash and replace it with a portable, adjustable,
multi colour lighting system, experiment with the camera settings, what
can you create?
The lighting system allows
a new way of lighting the at the time of the shot, allowing the photographer
and a model/subject to work together to create imaginative images,
creating the artistic photograph in real-time, not through editing.
Of course so much can be
done in Photoshop to edit and alter a photograph after the shot to create
effects, but capturing magical elements within a shot, at the time of
the shot is more fun and adventurous.
THE LIGHTING SYSTEM.
Spectral lighting is a portable, hand held, directional, intensity controllable,
individual colour selectable and mixing control system, primarily for
use in darkness and also useful to colour fill in low light locations.
Multiple light heads allow
many varied shots to be arranged, when used in total darkness only the
areas lit will be recorded in the photograph, the black unlit background
focuses attention on the subject/model and adds mystery the shot.
The system allows fast variable
colour changes within the shot to experimentally create mood, mystery,
atmosphere, shadows or background colour.
Light colours available - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, Pink,
White and Ultraviolet (limited use), the system allows infinite mixing
of the above colours.
Although LEDs emit much less light than a conventional flash do have
an advantage in that their light is much softer.
On interior shots, selectively elements within a room (background &
objects) can be lit for effect.
Because the lighting is directional it can create shadows gently fading
across the image, with careful positioning allowing the subject/model
to fade into the background.
Other elements within the kit also includes a flickering fire effect
unit.
A white LED light unit with brightness intensity control.
A white LED strobe effect drive unit.
Individual white LED lights
Various light related props.
It allows the photographer not only to direct model (or subject) it
allows the photographer to create the specific colour of the light as
required and from the direction required.
MODELING
It can add more varied and dramatic photographs to a models portfolio
that could give an edge and widen your photographic appeal when applying
for work, it can add a USP.
In this present competitive climate, a distinctive photograph of you
could increase your potential for a greater range of modelling assignments
or potentially attract clients from other fields - advertising, music,
video, drama, acting or film.
They will help give you uniqueness and individuality, Photographs taken
using the system would help you stand out from the crowd and appeal
to a broader range of work/clients, by including a more colourful, adventurous,
exciting, expressive range of photographs.
Photo shoots are available by arrangement at various locations, contact
me for details.
'The Art of Darkness' photographs try to capture unconventional and
distinctive expressions of you, an alternative to the usual flash lit
photographs.
I am inspired by the modelling photographs by David Bailey and Lord
Patrick Litchfield, they have an innocent beauty without the need for
computer software.
My photos are intended to create richness, texture, depth within the
setting/surrounding, Imply a story, a feeling or to express a perception
of yourself - how you would want yourself to be seen, to allow alternative
expressions, characteristics of you.
